New Look and a Quick Gift idea

How do you like my new colour scheme and header? I spent a leisurely Sunday afternoon playing with my blog layout and made some content updates, changed the colour scheme, and created a new digiscrapped header. Thanks very much to Carol Dunstan, Alana Gallagher, Kim Tonnet and Cassandra Grambau for the lovely cards I've been given, they suited my header colour theme beautifully as well as being inspiring in their own right :)

I also wanted to show you this quick gift idea, modified from a Chocolate/Candy Pull treat found on many blogs and Splitcoast Stampers. It can be adapted quite easily to suit anything from a fun size bar to a family block or even boxed chocs, and can be made in just a few minutes. I've made mine with some of last year's Holiday Thyme Designer Series Paper, the same beautiful patterns are available this year in a different colourway, called Wintergreen (109157). The best bit about using the DSP's is that the offcuts can be used to decorate the package, and the inside will co-ordinate beautifully with the outside. You could also use cardstock for smaller items. This particular pull treat holds my favourite chocolate, Lindt Intense Orange, dark chocolate with almond and orange peel slivers, mmmm yummmmm...

1. Take your sheet of DSP and lay the chocolate on top on the 'wrong side'. Allow 5 or more cm at the bottom for the sealing tape and crimping, and 5 or more cm at the top so the treat can't be seen until the ribbon is pulled.

2. Position the block so there will be enough at each side to overlap when the sides are folded across the centre of the block, mark and trim off the excess at the top and side. Note the measurements to save time if you want to make a batch for the same size block.

3. Score 2 parallel vertical lines at each side of the block, how far apart they are will depend on the thickness of the block, for the Lindt block I used it was 1cm. Use a bone folder to crease the lines neatly.

4. Place a piece of Sticky Strip strong double sided tape across the bottom centre, leaving the liner strip in place for now.

5. Place 2 lengths of tape/SNAIL adhesive on the under and over flaps and seal the long seam.

6. Pinch the bottom sides to pleat, and remove sticky strip liner, sealing the base. Use a paper crimper if you have one, or score several lines with your trimmer of bone folder to give a professional finish.

7. Use a circle punch to chomp a bit out of the chocolate NO!! centre top, and use a 1/4" hole punch to make a hole about 2cm below the chomp.

8. Cut a length of ribbon long enough to go right around the block top to bottom, with extra for tying, and thread through both holes you just punched. Slide the bar inside, this will push the ribbon down to the bottom! Tie the ribbon at the top, and then simply pull on it to draw out the treat! Easy Peasy!

9. Decorate the outside, I used a scallop circle and a 1 1/4" circle, stamped with the 'thank you' from Occasional Greetings. I laid these over a 1cm strip of DSP stuck down with SNAIL.

Quick, easy, elegant - what more could you want!!

Another one!

This is a picture of the last of my big batch, posted below... Blogger wasn't letting me upload it the other night along with the others (and looking at the length of that post (sorry!), I think that's probably a very good thing!!

My son went to a classmate's 7th birthday party on Saturday, and when asked what Melissa's favourite colour was, it was an emphatic "PINK!" Easy peasy! I used my new "In the Spotlight" Level 2 Hostess set (thanks Kim!!) and several shades of pink cardstock and ink. The patterned polka dot paper is "Loves Me" retired from Summer Mini 2007, and the base is Pretty In Pink. The Whisper White band is stamped with Pink Passion, Pretty in Pink and Pixie Pink, and both these were mounted on a Pink Passion strip. I stamped the Happy Birthday script greeting from It's your Birthday onto Pixie Pink, punched this out with 1 3/8" circle punch, and mounted this onto a Pink Passion scallop punch. Super fast, and it was a big hit! Happy Birthday Melissa!! I then had to make another copy yesterday, for my pink-loving 3.5yo daughter!

This was a super fast card to make, about 5 minutes - much faster than going to the newsagents, thats for sure! It would also lend itself to mass production - simply cover an A4 sheet of Whisper White with the "In the Spotlight" stamps, and then cut the sheet into strips for mounting. This set is quite unisex, so it could be made in modified colours for lots of different occasions :)

Happy Monday everyone!

Saturday 20 September 2008

I told you September was busy round here!

Put together all those Christmas and New Year babies, and a dash of Father's day for good measure, and we have card central around here in September! First off the block is Father's day - 3 cards there, those are already posted for you to see below :)

Next up we have my son's birthday, his fave colour is orange, and I made my first ever Spinner card using the star from the Nursery Necessities set. I put Crystal Effects dimensional adhesive over the blue stamped star, and it made the colour run a little - note to self, be patient and wait till ink DRIES before you do this!! He didn't mind, and wanted to take it for News that week. The greeting on the card is from the Family Phrases set, and the patterned paper is Jersey Shore.

Next we have a one-off ring-in occasion to add to my creative to-do list this year, my cousin Carol from Ireland is marrying her sweetheart Fergal on 26th September, so I made this card to send them our best wishes for a happy future. It uses Whisper White cardstock embossed with textile and swiss dots folders, on a Blush Blossom card base with edges sponged in Groovy Guava ink. Notice how sharp the embossing turns out??!! That's because of the really densely packed paper fibres in the Whisper White (and Very Vanilla) Stampin' Up! cardstocks - it's also what gives such crisp stamped images on these colours. Before embossing I stamped the large flourish from Baroque Motifs in Groovy Guava onto the white piece. I made a scalloped edge with the corner rounder punch and added holes with the 1/8" circle punch, and backed the piece with a strip of Whisper White for neatness. A Blush Blossom band was stamped with the Cherish sentiment from Baroque Motifs in Groovy Guava, and the circle flower motif was stamped in Groovy Guava on Whisper White and punched with the circle scallop punch. The small star flower from the same set was stamped on Blush Blossom and punched using the Boho Blossoms punch. I layered this with Stampin' Dimensionals, and topped it with an adhesive half pearl from the Pretties Kit. I hope they like it!

Today is my FIL's birthday, and next in the list is the card I made for him. It uses Creamy Caramel rolled in Versamark with the Speckled Wheel as the base. Next there is a layer of Outlaw DSP, and then a torn piece of Naturals Ivory. This is wrapped in a band of wide chocolate grosgrain ribbon. I cut a circle out of Close to Cocoa and layered a scallop on top. The scallop was stamped with the circle motif from Boho Backgrounds using my Close to Cocoa, Chocolate Chip and Close to Cocoa markers to give a multicoloured effect. To finish I added a greeting from It's your Birthday. I love the masculine colours and patterns in the Boho themed items!

Then we have a card for MY dad's birthday, which is next weekend (I was on a roll, what can I say!) No prizes for guessing where my dad's cultural origins lie! I chose his fave green, Garden Green and Wild Wasabi in this case, and threw in some white and orange for completeness (Groovy Guava again - do you think I can get away with writing GG now??) The card uses several of the small stamps from the Occasionally set, with a stray from the It's Your Birthday set, and these were punched using the 3/4" circle punch and mounted along with some solid coloured circles on Stampin' Dimensionals on a Whisper White background sponged with GG. A greeting from It's Your Birthday was stamped in Garden Green on a white panel, mounted on a Wild Wasabi piece, and layered over some Wild Wasabi striped grosgrain ribbon.

Finally in this batch (phew I can hear you sigh - Blogger wouldn't let me load the last one I made along with these) is a card for my SIL - next week again. This is a dramatic version of a catalogue sample using the hostess set "From the Garden", stamped in Purely Pomegranate rather than GG as in the catalogue. This stamp didn't really appeal to me on first sight, but when I saw a couple of cards made by Teneale Williams, I thought I should add it to my collection. I'm glad I did, because it makes for a super fast card, with just one impression you're good to go! There is a thin band of River Rock sandwiched between some textured Purely Pomegranate cardstock and some stitched grosgrain in Purely Pomegranate. The greeting is from It's Your Birthday and is stamped in Basic Black.

Back tomorrow maybe with the lucky last from this batch!! Hope you like them, I'd love to read your comments and constructive advice!

Ho Ho Ho!!!! The silly season is on it's way!

And, it's time to get ready!

My next Christmas Stamp-a-Stack class will be held at my home in Cherrybrook on Saturday 11th October, 10am - 1pm. You will come and create 6 cards, 3 each of 2 different designs. The card above is an example of one card made at my last Stamp-a-Stack. Class cost is $15.00 and includes all materials, written instructions, drinks and home-baked goodies. Please call me on 9484 9447 to reserve your place, it's filling fast! Or, email me for more details!
The card above uses Mellow Moss as the base, sponged with Always Artichoke ink. Strips of Holiday Harmony paper from the Spring Mini were distressed and inked with matching ink, and were mounted on the card base. Merry Merry was used to stamp the greeting and snowflake onto River Rock mounted on Purely Pomegranate. A couple of eyelets finish off this card nicely, and it's a great one for mass production. Already have some more ideas for next time, so I'll look forward to seeing you there!

Better late than never!

I realised when looking through my photos this month that I haven't posted the Father's Day cards! So, here they are - including the 'action' card made by my little boy for his daddy!

The Blue card is on a Blue Bayou background, stamped with Blue Bayou ink with the Canvas background stamp. Then a piece of Soft Sky cardstock was run through the Cuttlebug with the Forest Branches embossing folder, and then I distressed the edges using the distressing tool from the Cutter Kit. A piece of Wild Wasabi cardstock was sponged with Wild Wasabi using a Sponge Dauber and a piece of VeryVanilla stamped with the Father's Day stamp from Occasional Greetings in Bayou Blue was mounted over it. Wide grosgrain in Certainly Celery was tied around the Soft Sky piece to finish. I also made this card with a Celery panel in place of the Wasabi, but I forgot to take a pic before posting off to my dad :) I'm sure you get the idea anyway!
The red and blue card is based on Not Quite Navy cardstock, and I have used the Faux Tearing technique and the Canvas background, stamped in Blue Bayou ink, the 'torn' edge is sponged with Blue Bayou ink with a dauber to create the look of an extra layer. The 'torn' theme is continued with the piece of Ruby Red, mounted with Very Vanilla stamped with the Father's Day stamp in Ruby Red. Three aged copper brads were placed at the bottom, and wide grosgrain in Real Red was used as a band. Note to self - select Real Red cardstock next time! (Or, better still, ask Stampin' Up for wide grosgrain in my FAVE colour, Ruby Red!)
My son's card says "I love you" on the front, with action popping bright yellow (Yoyo Yellow perhaps?) arms attached to the inside, against a very lifelike drawing of Daddy, "This Much" are the words hiding under the arms. One to treasure always, I'm sure!
Don't forget to RSVP ASAP to our "Get Ready for Christmas" Craft day on 25th October at Pennant Hills - love to see you there for a productive day! Give me a call on 9484 9447 to reserve your place!

Tool Time!

I thought I would introduce an occasional tutorial/tips post about some of my favourite stamping equipment. Hopefully even experienced stampers will learn a thing or two to help them get the most from their tools :) I will aim to include instructions, and also answer some FAQ's I've come across about the product.

First up - the Stampin' Scrub™ and Stampin Mist™ Stamp cleaning system

(If you don't own this product, you can find it on page 149 of the Stampin' Up! 2008-09 catalogue - the Scrub is code 102642 and is $28.95 and the (small spray) Mist is code 102395 and $7.95).

What is it?

The Stampin' Scrub is a hinged plastic case, with two microfibre cleaning mats inside. Stampin' Mist is a concentrated cleaner and rubber conditioner, available in a small spray bottle and a large refill bottle. As a team, they both clean and protect your rubber stamps, and it's a lot quicker and more convenient than previous methods I've used with baby wipes and damp cloths.

Why are there two sides, and which side do I use for what?

The Stampin' Scrub system is designed to have on your worktable and eliminate trips to the sink for cleaning stamps between ink colours. You have a cleaning side moistened with Stampin' Mist spray, and a drying side to remove any moisture so you are ready to stamp again in an instant. The cleaning side has little a water droplet symbol in the edge gutter, and the drying side has a little umbrella symbol. Both pads are identical, it they are marked simply to help you remember which side has the cleaning spray applied. A tip you might like to use is to add a small label eg CLEAN and DRY, or a coloured sticky dot to one side, as the moulded symbols can be hard to see at times. The photo above shows my small white stickers at the edges of the mats.

How do I use it?

I like to pre-moisten the cleaning side with a thorough misting with a water spray bottle (an old travel size hairspray bottle I keep filled with water in my kit) before adding a couple of sprays of Stampin' Mist. Stampin' Mist is a very concentrated cleaner, and you only need a tiny bit, and having the mat slightly damp before hand helps to spread the cleaner out across the mat area, and also reduces the amount of Mist you will use without affecting cleaning performance.

Next, take your soiled stamp and rub it back and forth across the moistened mat, you should see some foaming where the cleaner is activated. Some people like to stamp off excess ink onto scrap paper before cleaning, and this extends the time between Scrub cleanings, but it's not essential (and I usually don't bother...) You can also 'refresh' the Mist cleaner on your pad by spraying with a little more water mist. This is especially useful in hot weather, as the cleaner is still there, just the water has evaporated. When the foaming action disappears, it's time for a couple more squirts of Stampin Mist.

Then rub the cleaned stamp across the dry mat on the other side, and you're ready to go with your next ink! It also makes pack-up time faster - it's easy to get into the habit of cleaning stamps as you go and popping them back in their storage case.

Can I use the scrub with Stazon and Craft (pigment) ink?

Yes! The Stampin' Scrub will clean off all kinds of ink. Stampin' Mist will remove most Stazon ink especially if the stamps are cleaned immediately after use. Pigment ink will leave more residue behind on the mat, but it is easily cleaned off after your stamping session.

How do I clean the Stampin' Scrub?

While the mats are replaceable, the set that comes with your Stampin' Scrub will last a very long time. The mats can be removed for cleaning, but I find it just as easy to take the whole Scrub to the sink with the mats in place. I first rinse the Scrub with warm water to remove most of the ink, and then I massage in a small amount of mild detergent - dishwashing liquid is ideal, and then rinse again to remove the remaining ink until the water runs clear. I then give the Scrub a firm shake to get rid of most of the water. Finally, I have a thick black hand towel I save just for the purpose of soaking up remaining moisture from my scrub - I simply lay the towel over the damp Scrub and press down. This has it ready to go again immediately, which is handy! Alternatively, you can simply stand the Scrub up on the drainer board and wait for it to air dry.
*Note* Please DON'T use the dishwasher to clean your scrub! While it won't affect the cleaning performance of the mats, the heat might cause the mats to buckle.
Can I use the Stampin' Scrub for cleaning my other stamps?
YES! Any stamp, acrylic, foam, wood mounted, EZ-mounted etc can be cleaned on the Scrub, it is even big enough for Stampin' Up!'s large background stamps.
I hope you'll agree the Stampin' Scrub and Mist are a great addition to your Stamper's toolkit, order a Stampin' Scrub and Mist from me during September for a free ribbon pack bonus! Offer ends September 30 at 6pm Have a Stampin' Scrub tip of your own to add? Leave a comment to share it with others here!

Sneak Peek!

At our Regional Training conference last Saturday, Demonstrators got to have a good play with some not-quite-here products! (how good is a conference where you get to stamp!!) We've been told we can look forward to these products sooner rather than later, so we have our fingers crossed for their appearance in the Summer Mini, starting December 1 (mmm, plenty of Christmas present ideas here!!) We also made a very nice 6x6 scrapbook page in the same theme colours, but I haven't selected a photo to put on it yet, so you'll see that later maybe!

Saturday 6 September 2008

Wowee! What a day!

It's been a busy week in preparation for Stampin' Up! Regional Training today. The event was held at Darling Harbour Exhibition centre, in a gorgeous harbour front gallery room. Shame about the dull weather, but we were all far too busy stamping and oohing and ahhing over the fabulous technique presentations, so the view would probably have been wasted!

I have collected a big box of lovely swap cards, made by demonstrators from all over NSW and some even beyond, and I have come away even more inspired to create! Where's that 36hour clock gone???

In addition to some great business tips shared by some of SU's most successful demonstrators, we also made some great projects with a brand new stamp set and tools due to arrive here before the end of the year we think! Very exciting! My camera is chock a block full of photos, I'll get a chance to post some highlights during the week I hope.

The next regionals won't be until this time next year, but if you'd like to join me as a guest, start thinking about it now and register your interest with me at michelle.dyson@bigpond.com to be sent information on how you can experience this unique day.

Here's sending a very HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all the dads out there, some of them I know are getting lovely hand-stamped cards!

Monday 1 September 2008

I got an award!

Thanks Dani Fender for giving me my very first Blogging award! I had the pleasure of meeting Dani at the recent team weekend away, and she is one seriously talented YOUNG lady! That's Dani above holding an amazing watercoloured card in the striking combination of purples, orange and black (it was a colour challenge that I abstained from due to fear!) And, the t-shirt is apt, she was great company stamping away into the wee hours!

Now I get the pleasure of deciding where to send it next... and it came with rules! Some of which I think I will need to break, not sure if I have 4 dedicated followers of my blog!

1. Only 5 people allowed.

2. 4 have to be dedicated followers of your blog

3. one has to be someone new or recently new to your blog and live in another part of the world.

4. you must link back to whoever gave you the award.

Here we go!

1. Cass Grambau, my lovely upline, who I think checks out my blog from time to time ;)

2. Carolyn Gibbs, my stunningly talented downline, who never ceases to amaze me with her creativity!

3. Keeping it in the family again with a brand new blogger, who has been very busy setting up a fabulous blog in practically no time (I want her clock too Dani, cos it's also got more hours on it than mine!)... lets give a round of applause to the brilliant Kim Tonnet! Kim is also very generous with her time and tools, especially when I was getting started with SU, and it is great to have my SU "Grandma" just a stone's throw away!

4. Linda Higgins, who may or may not be new to my blog! Linda was the demonstrator for the very first Stampin' Up! workshop I attended, and although I already had an upline-to-be, she answered lots of my questions and made it all look SOOO easy and fun, that I made up my mind on the spot! Linda lives in another part of the world called the Central Coast, and has recently been justly rewarded for her hard work by going on the Incentive Trip. Now, Palm Cove most DEFINITELY counts as another world! So glad to read you had a wonderful time being spoiled!

5. Lin Mei Yap - who is getting this award again from me, simply because if I'm at all bored, or in need of procrastination, heading to her blog is guaranteed to give me a laugh! I love her writing style, and her cards are to die for!

Off to make some more swaps for Regional Training this coming Saturday! And I still haven't made those fathers day cards... But! I am beginning to feel a little more human and finally think this respiratory bug is on the retreat, fingers crossed!
